SATISFACTION

Many people spend their lives looking for satisfaction in their lives, some find it, some do not. Have you ever seen a famous place say the Eiffel Tower, Westminster Abbey or the Grand Canyon, and thought “it’s just as I imagined”. After seeing a few “imagined” places, you realize you don’t have to see it all to be satisfied. You don’t have to set foot on every Continent or set foot in every state to be satisfied anymore. Our society shouts at us every day to do this or do that; remember this is your life no one else can experience your life but you and our society have no right to influence you. You may or may not have been satisfied in your life, however only you can tell if you have been satisfied; on the scales of what our society would place you, have no relevance. When I was a teenager the Rolling Stones sang “I can't get no satisfaction”, I thought it was the saddest song ever written, The Rolling Stones had everything but no satisfaction. I failed English, Math and Science and it did not bother me because my love was Art, Design, and Drafting so I felt very satisfied! I have always felt satisfied with everything I have done even when I have failed miserably. You cannot try to find satisfaction you just have to feel satisfied. “I can't get no satisfaction I can't get no satisfaction 'Cause I try, and I try, and I try, and I try I can't get no, I can't get no When I'm drivin' in my car and that man comes on the radio He's tellin' me more and more about some useless information Supposed to fire my imagination I can't get no satisfaction 'Cause I try and I try and I try and I try When I'm watchin' my T. V. and that man comes on to tell me How white my shirts can be but he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke The same cigarettes as me, and I still can't get no satisfaction”. If you ask a 70 – 80-year-old senior how many years of life do you think you have left the answer most people will give is 15 – 20 years. So, it is never too late to plan excitement, joy, and fun into your life and find satisfaction. I no longer have the family I once had, with time my family has changed, even if you are alone, you can choose the family you want to have around you, just ask.

SUCCESS

CIMG2044.jpg

Have you ever wondered why you are here? I am a planner and planned out my life in my teen years even when it was impossible. I succeeded even the impossible but “I still hadn’t found what I was looking for”. 20 years after the Stones “Satisfaction” U2 asked this question, I still haven't found what I'm looking for”. “I have climbed the highest mountains, I have run through the fields Only to be with you, Only to be with you. I have run, I have crawled, I have scaled these city walls These city walls, only to be with you. But I still haven't found what I'm looking for. But I still haven't found what I'm looking for. I have kissed honey lips, felt the healing in her finger tips It burned like fire(I was) burning inside her. I have spoken with the tongue of angels, I have held the hand of a devil But I still haven't found what I'm looking for”. So what are we all looking for; what is the answer to life, why are we here? For me I found my answer when I was 80 years old and talking with my 23-year-old gym trainer. Very simply – “It does not matter”. At 50 or more, or a lot more years, give it up and get on with living, none of us have lots of time to dwell on the what if’s of life. Regarding beliefs, after life, Faith, etc. also very simple, it does not matter either! What is, is and what will be will be. When I die, I won’t know if it was just me or if the world came to an end. I still have my faith, beliefs, and my opinions but now I have a peaceful easy feeling about them.

Mentors & Life changers

No one can do much on their own without help from others, family, friends, associates, etc.  However, there are a very special group of people we are privileged to have shown up in our lives and they are our Mentors.  Yes, there are mentors we have in our lives, like my father and mother, my 3 aunts and 2 uncles, my wife and my children, but our Mentors change our lives for the better even when we are not looking for change.

I am privileged to have had 8 such people in my life!  Now some may become your best friend and some you may not even like, (2 on this list I did not like) but they helped transform my life.

George Fejer –

Mentor – My first employer, who hired me right out of furniture college.  He was a famous furniture designer at the top of his career and hired me as an assistant designer.  Years later I found out that I was the only student from my graduating class who found a job in furniture design within the first year of graduating.

Tom Hanson –

Mentor – President of Herman Miller of Canada, hired me after I answered a newspaper ad.  My college thesis on furniture design in the United States and Sweden featured Herman Miller furniture.  I was hired as the furniture designer for Herman Miller of Canada, Ltd, an absolute dream job for designer of 23 with only 2 years out of college.

Gene Kyle –

Life Changer – Was the Director of Design for GTE Sylvania, in Batavia NY.  He hired me as a “pair of hands” he needed, he took me to lunch in the company cafeteria, (I thought I was going to have to pay for my lunch, but he picked up the tab).  At HR I was told that they would get me immigration papers and let me know a starting date.  I drove back to Toronto, thinking right that’s not going to happen any time soon if at all, and I really did not want to be just a pair of hands.  6 months went by and then I got the call, can I start in 2 weeks?  My life changed, this time I would drive into the USA and stay there!  I dreaded starting to work for Gene but when I got to HR I found out that Gene had left and I would have a new boss, Bruce Anderson.

Paul Bush –

Life Changer – Paul was the owner of Bush Industries.  I knew Paul because Bush was a supplier to Sylvania of TV stands and products.  He hired me to design a line of computer furniture.  Paul was a hardheaded businessman and was the hardest person to work for he always wanted more and always wanted to pay less, my designs took Bush Industries from $24M to $50M in 6 months.  Every day he arrived at work he checked what orders came in overnight before he did anything else.  20 years go by and his company grew fast and large to over $200M but along the way he stopped checking the incoming orders and his company went bankrupt and he lost his company.  Paul taught me many things especially, always spend less than your incoming orders.

Ed Moeger –

Mentor – Ed, like Paul, was part owner of a company that supplied GTE Sylvania.  His company was in Toronto, Canada and specialized in laminated cabinetry.  I had a client that manufactured metal cabinetry, and they hired me to design a line of movable and lockable computer cabinetry for the Federal Government; my designs required both specialized cabinetries.  I had Ed do the wood product and my client do the metal product.  Ed became a great friend and gave me advice and helped me as I grew my own business.

Bill Wiersma –

Mentor – Bill was President of RUTT Custom Cabinetry, and he hired me to design a line of custom cabinetry in 1982.  As soon as he hired me, he asked me what deposit I would like.  No one had ever asked me such a question, so I said the first thing that came into my head, $1,000.  He immediately called his secretary in and told her to cut a check for $1,000. to take with me!  For 20 years I worked with Bill, during those years I designed 50 product lines, many show booths and showrooms in most of the Design Centers in the USA.  Bill was always there for me, we travelled together we were so close that when he was considering retiring, he wanted my advice.

Mike Calimeri –

Mentor – Mike is President of Artone Manufacturing in Jamestown, NY.  A family business started by his father an immigrant from Sicilia.  I have been consultant to Artone for the past 20+ years.  We have travelled to Europe and China together and worked on furniture products for health care, hospitality, casinos, college dorms, show booths, installations etc.  In the process I have learned all the ups and downs that a small furniture business must endure; maintaining a family business is a major responsibility.  Mike is one of the most honest and stable gentlemen I have had the honor to work with.

Anthony Monda –

Life Changer – I met Anthony when I was 80 years old and he was 57 years younger than I.  We met at the Gym, and he became my trainer in Muscle Mass Training.  Anthony reminded me of when I was 23 and emigrated to Canada not because of the differences but because of the similarities.  Talking with Anthony is like talking to someone who has the smarts and experience of someone twice his age.  He challenged me and I grew in strength and intellect.  What I learned from Anthony is that anything is possible at any age so long as you put your mind to it.  There is a saying “People come into your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime – either as a blessing or a lesson.”  Anthony came into my life for a reason, a season, a blessing and a lesson.

Yes, a person can change your life around even if you are over 80!  My lesson to you is to write down the names of people who mentored or changed the direction of your life; you may have 2 or 22 people.  The process of this is to fire up your brain and it will expand your life and maybe even extend it; brain exercises are essential!

The image is of the great wall of China.  This wall was a life changer built by the Chinese 2,300 years ago and is over 13,000 miles long.  The wall changed their lives, stopping bandits from the north, It can be seen from space.

The picture is a plan of the kitchen & Bath showroom I designed in the Merchandise Mart in Chicago. When it opened in 1930, it was the world's largest building, with 4 million square feet (372,000 m2) of floor space.  When built no one was concerned about detailed dimensions.  Every column was approximately 2-foot square and the distances between them varied, no two were the same, making it a statical nightmare.  My cabinetry had to be fitted exactly and help to hide the 11 columns.  I was able to work around the building statics even though I failed math in school!  So, you too can work around these seniors’ statics and avoid becoming one of them!

Life is Amazing

20250831_140054X.jpg

From 15 species of Tortoise in the Galapagos Islands to the petal of a flower we cannot but ask why.  Life is amazing in every little detail; why do the little petals of a chrysanthemum curl up inwards as it ages looking like a lot of little trumpets, when many other flower petals age outwards, turn brown and then fall off.

When we were children, we would notice these little details and ask questions as we grew up into adults, we hardly noticed the change of seasons taking everything for granted and never stopping to smell the roses.

Today the extremes in life are sort after taking selfies in amazing surroundings to get that picture on a jutting rock with your arms outstretched in a death-defying pose.  We actually miss the amazing beauty that surrounds us.  It is like the more we see the more we take for granted and just don’t see anymore.  We view drone this and drone that on our smart phones, I pads, computers and television and miss what is right in front of us.

We have made it this far, we are still alive after so many years now it is time to open our eyes, we don’t have to travel the world or check off something on our bucket list to be amazed, just grab a $14. Bunch of flowers at the supermarket, take them home and put them in a jar like I did.

Knees & Joints Part 1

People our age can end up wearing out a joint or two.  Fortunately, there are options – cortisone and other joint injections lasting 3 months or 6 months.  My cortisone injections in my knees worked so well I was pushing 150 lbs. on the plate loaded squat press.  I said, “I’m not going have knee replacements”. (see video) Well, that was great until my cortisone injections and gel shots stopped working!  First, they lasted 2 months, then one month, then 1 week until waiting for the next injection was extremely painful.

My surgeon told me I was a perfect candidate for full knee replacements because I had been strengthening my leg and knee muscles with muscle mass training.  I chose my right knee and set a second appointment for the left knee 11 weeks later.  My surgeon told me after each surgery that my joints were dreadful, most people don’t wait this long.

Amazingly I was driving again 2 weeks and 6 days later.  For my left knee I was driving 2 weeks and 3 days later.

Now I am 8 weeks out from my second surgery.  This is a process.  various drugs, therapy, exercise, on and off pain, determination and waiting for the time your joint actually feels normal again – still waiting.  Feeling normal can take up to one year or more, but I remember my knees had not felt normal for at least the past 5 years!

Happiness!

Happiness is an essential part of our lives, without it we can be miserable and miserable is not a necessary part of our lives at all, in fact it brings us down to where no one wants to be around us and we are more likely to get sick and die sooner!  The best song written about happiness is the one written and sung by country singer Bill Anderson who has written so many positive songs and still performs at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.  I first heard “Happiness” when I was in my teens, it has helped me many times in my life to be thankful and happy.

"Happiness" written & sung by Bill Anderson

Happiness happiness the greatest gift that I possess
I thank the Lord I've been blessed with more than my share of happiness

To me this old world is a wonderful place
And I'm just about the luckiest human in the whole human race
I've got no silver and I've got no gold just a whole lot of happiness in my soul
Happiness happiness...

Happiness to me is an ocean tide or a sunset fading on a mountain side
Or maybe a big old heaven full of stars up above
When I'm in the arms of the one I love
Happiness is a field of grain lifting its face to the falling rain
I can see it in the sunshine I breathe it in the rain happiness everywhere
Happiness happiness...

A wise old man told me one time that happiness is nothing but a frame of mind
I hope when you go to measuring my success
That you don't count my money count my happiness
Happiness happiness...
Happiness happiness...

This is the absolute best song ever to play and listen to if you are feeling down, play it listen, have the words speak to you.  Put your mind to it – feeling down is in your mind you have the control of this, only you can change your mind and switch to positive from negative.  Bad things are all around us, and if you are alone, it is so easy to fall prey to bad.  Only bad news is news, so turn your mind off the news and see the beauty in life, squeeze your arms and feel the movement of your bones, feel the texture of your skin, look in the mirror at your eyes and imagine your mind behind your eyes changing into positive.

We have the largest collection of music ever complied for us to listen to because new music is being created every day so each new day the collection gets bigger!  Turning on the radio gives us positive and negative jives.  You can create your own positive list and play it every time you need it.  My list includes – Sunshine on my shoulder, John Denver – Top of the World, The Carpenters – Take a giant step, The Monkees – Today is mine, Glen Campbell – Beautiful World, Dierks Bentley – Heaven, Bryan Adams – Imagine, John Lennon – Remember When, Alan Jackson – Add some music to your day, The Beach Boys – Young as we are ever gonna to be, Colin Raye – I hope you dance, Lee Ann Wormack.

You get the idea; this is 10 from my list of 200.  Yes, some are old, but I am 80+ we all have our favorites from years past, there is nothing wrong with today’s music when it is on a positive note!

PAIN - PAIN - & MORE PAIN

IMG_7781.JPG

Pain is what goes on behind the mirrored glasses, yes it’s in our mind.

“The pain will go away” We have all been told this at some time or other, well what if it doesn’t go away?  Living with pain can be painful!   No one wants to live with pain and that is why pain killers sell.  The pain management market size is estimated at 80.92 billion USD in 2025.

The first and most important thing to know is why you have pain in the first place.  As an example: you may have indigestion, the most common cause is something you ate.  Once you have figured out the food or drink you ate that caused it your choice is next time avoid this item in your diet or accept that you will continue to have indigestion.  The indigestion probably means that you have an allergic reaction, or you might be eating too fast.

As we age our bodies cause more things to go wrong and that can lead to more pain.  Arthritic pain causes so much pain in our joints.  Unfortunately, if something we do causes pain we tend to stop doing it when we really need to exercise through the pain.

When I started muscle mass training, I also had cortisone injections every 3 months in my knees so my pain was minimal, now my cortisone injections have lost their effect so I feel the pain, nothing has changed in my knees, I am still bone on bone, so I can still do my exercises if I accept my increased level of pain.  My exercising will not make my knees worse, but will continue to strengthen my muscles, my choice.  I am under supervision of my knee surgeon, my primary care physician and my physician assistant.  Yes, I sometimes take a pain pill but so many other things have a cause and effect, the weather, heat, cold, damp, dry, even what I eat and how much, etc.

The most important take away is to find out what is causing your pain and remember taking pain medications only mask the pain and do not stop the cause of the pain.

It does not matter whether it is your knees, shoulders, hips, stomach, or, etc. staying a healthy weight, eating healthy meals, working your joints every day, will reduce your aches and pains and reduce your need for pain suppressants.

For me I am a great candidate for knee replacements so in November my right knee will get a replacement, my increased muscle strength in my legs should make the operation and my therapy easier.
