“Before I save someone else, I’ve got to save myself” (Ed Sheeran). This is my story, and I trust it will inspire you to save yourself! Make it possible, make it fun! It is like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.
Getting and staying healthy was just a loose goal that I only semi felt was possible. To be honest I was in a rut. I thought that for 80 I was in good shape each year getting older and so less active and wondering if next year I would still be able to do what I did last year. After all I was doing what the doctors told me, and was lucky to only be taking one small pill a day (10mg Statin). I was nicely on my way to aging in place!
My story could have ended there, but I got a huge jolt when my new friend introduced me to Muscle Mass Training. He forced me to work out to my maximum ability that was much greater than I ever thought possible, indeed I thought I was going to break! Until then I thought going to the gym was working out, no forcing to give your maximum strength is working out. Within a month I had my answer I could reverse my aging.
Now I give my workout my all, in return I am younger all over again. Now you do not have to do muscle mass training, but you do have to strengthen all your muscles one way or another. I supplement my training with cardio, a walking goal of 6,000 steps 4 times a week (your smart phone has apps to do the counting for you) and I do stretch exercises at home.
Having such success in my exercise my attitude changed. I was always a happy, positive person so changing my mind approach to life came easy for me. I am now so much more grateful and thankful for every little thing in life, and I see every day as a gift for me to live my life fully and give back to others.
Diet is probably the hardest for me and probably will be for most people. The American diet is not for extending life or for even staying heathy. For me it seemed easy no more candy, cake, ice-cream and cookies, just replace with nuts, Greek yogurt, more fruit and vegetables’, less beef and more white meet. Doing this was easy but I lost weight that I could not afford to lose. For many people unfortunately it will be less alcohol, no more processed foods, French fries and fried food, no more soda drinks, only 3oz’s. beef per serving. By changing your diet, it will have a huge health gain and can drastically reduce illnesses and such things as cancer. I eat more fish; I eat a can of red salmon (4 servings for lunches) most weeks. A can has more nutrients than fresh fish from the store since it is canned immediately it is caught.
Please do not get the idea that I do not relapse, eat a loaded pizza, have a couple of glasses of wine, or cocktails’, or eat a juicy steak because I do. There is nothing wrong with this so long as your “eye is still on the Tiger”.
